The donor's family has offered their loved one's organs as a gift, and it gives them hope and strength during their tragedy.

When I'm placed on the waiting list, the transplant team will need to document my blood group, height, and lung capacity. They'll also need the results of my tissue typing blood test (HLA).

During an average month, approximately 12 -14 organs are considered good enough to set up as a potential transplant. Only half of these operations will go ahead.

Whatever happened to my donor, every effort will have been made to help them recover. Sadly, their I.C.U. team made the decision that any further care would be futile. At this point, the donor’s family will be approached to discuss organ donation.

There is no risk to me in accepting organs from donors who have smoked, older donors, or donors who have had cancer.

I won't be offered lungs from an ex-smoker.
